Minister Who Allegedly Married the Late Aaliyah and R. Kelly Finally Speaks Out About the Wedding
In July 2019, the rapper R. Kelly was charged with two separate federal indictments in Illinois and Brooklyn, and another in Minnesota in August, giving him three separate criminal cases in all three states. The allegations against him are describes as: organised efforts from the star to transport underage girls over state lines for illegal sexual purposes, including the production of child pornography, as well as obstructing justice by destroying evidence and bribing or threatening witnesses. As well as numerous prostitution charges.
According to the BBC, Kelly appeared in court in New York at the start of August 2019, where he pleaded not guilty, but was denied bail on the grounds that he poses a flight risk.
After many months of delays because of Covid-19, witness tampering, replacing legal teams, and more, the trial was finally able to resume in August of 2021. A topic brought up in the pre-trial, was that if Kelly would deny or admit to having a sexual relationship with r&b singer Aaliyah Haughton, more commonly known as simply Aaliyah, when she was a minor. Both Kelly and Aaliyah had denied the relationship, but Kelly's representation said no to denying it.
Nathan Edmond, the minister that officiated the wedding of R. Kelly and Aaliyah, was subpoenaed and then testified against Kelly this past week, in court. According to the federal indictment, he met Aaliyah when she was only 12 years old and began a sexual relationship with her shortly after this. The Prosecution team alleges that Kelly only decided to marry her because he believed she was pregnant, and that their marriage would could keep her from testifying against him. Kelly has already been previously charged with bribing an official in the state of Illinois to purchase a fake ID for the then 15 year old Aaliyah so that they could say she was 18 on their marriage license.
Edmond stated in his testimony that he was asked to do the ceremony as a favor and at the time had no idea who the couple were. He was also asked to never speak about the wedding, which he promised to do. He did not break his word until that day in court.
The marriage of the two only lasted around one year, as Aaliyah's parents had it nullified since she was still a minor. The "princess of r&b" would die suddenly in a plane crash only a few short years later.
It has finally been confirmed what people have speculated for years, 27 year old R. Kelly did make a child bride out of the 15 year old Aaliyah.
