WNBA Chicago Sky Won Their Very First Championship Trophy!
On October 17,2021, The WNBA Chicago Sky officially won their first championship against the Phoenix Mercury at the Wintrust Arena. The Chicago Sky was founded in 2006 and haven’t won any championships, that is until Forward player Candice Parker came into the picture.
After 13 seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks, Candice Parker returned to her home state, Illinois, to be with the Chicago Sky in hopes of bringing a title to the team and representing her city.
"I know the game of basketball, and I know what it takes to be a champion. And here we are." WNBA Chicago Sky Head Coach James Wade said.
After playing 4 games against the Phoenix Mercury, It was a total of 3 of the games that Chicago Sky won including their last one in which brought home their championship trophy.
With Candice Parker’s 16 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and four steals with the help of point guard Courtney Vandersloot 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 15 assists throughout the game, it was no wonder the Wintrust Arena was a sold out arena as everyone screamed and cheered for the game 4 ending the score of 80-74 against the Phoenix Mercury. Also, ending with Forward player Kahleah Copper becoming the MVP of the WNBA Finals.
After the win, Chicago celebrated The WNBA team from October 18,2021 to today in which they finished the celebration with a parade leading to the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. Guest appearances included Chance The rapper, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and TV host Val Warner.
The owners of the WNBA Chicago Sky were seen at the celebration in addition as they too were excited and acknowledged the team for their hard work and effort. Also for those you who didn’t know, Destiny Child member Michelle Williams owns a part of the Chicago Sky as she tweeted a shout-out to the winning team on her twitter account. Former President Barack Obama also tweeted in celebration of the WNBA champions.
